25, 27, 29 January 2017
The Shoe Factory, Nicosia / 8.30pm

Following the great success of its first edition last year, enLIVE is returning again in January 2017 with another yet fascinating series of “film screenings – concerts”. enLIVE, the first project of its kind in Cyprus, gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy some of the most emblematic films of the silent era, set to original music by contemporary composers and performed live in the intimate surroundings of The Shoe Factory in Nicosia. In addition, it also presents short films by contemporary filmmakers set to the music of classical composers and includes a number of other activities such as educational workshops and lectures.

enLIVE 2, which is organised on 25, 27 and 29 January 2017, will present three silent cinematic masterpieces, which are as diverse and varied as the cities, lives and characters which are being projected through them. Likewise, each feature silent film will be prefaced by a short film created by a team of contemporary Cypriot filmmakers, which will correspond to a classical composition. The live performance of original music by a number of talented musicians will marvellously enhance the mood and atmosphere of each silent film, divulge its veiled imageries and decipher its connotation. As a result, enLIVE 2 is certain to be an absolutely unique and stimulating visual and aural experience, not to be missed!

SUNDAY 29 JANUARY 2017 / 8:30PM

“IT” (1927)
Composer: Panagiotis Theodossiou
Live Performance: Alexandros Makris (piano), Efstathios Kiossoglou (clarinet)Yiorgos Arnis (double-bass)Vasileios Panagiotopoulos (drums)

"It" is a 1927 silent romantic comedy film by Clarence G. Badger describing the story of a shop girl who falls in love with her handsome and wealthy boss of the department store where she works. The story is based on a novel by Elinor Glyn which was originally published in sequels in Cosmopolitan magazine. The film, which was premiered in Los Angeles in January 1927, turned actress Clara Bow into a major star, and led people to label her the “It girl”. The picture was considered lost for many years, but a nitrate-copy was found in Prague in the 1960s. In 2001, "It" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The original music for “It”, for jazz ensemble, is composed by Panagiotis Theodosiou and it will be performed live by Alexandros Makris (piano), Efstathios Kiossoglou (clarinet), Yiorgos Arnis (double-bass), Vasileios Panagiotopoulos (drums).

    - Το Σάββατο στον Ιανό τι ετοιμάζετε;

    «Πρόκειται για την πρώτη "συναυλιακή" παρουσίαση του δίσκου "Metamorphosis" -κυκλοφόρησε πέρυσι από την δισκογραφική εταιρεία DNA Label- από τους συντελεστές της ηχογράφησης Σπύρο Κοντό στο όμποε και Λητώ Θώμου στο πιάνο».

    - Τι θα ακουστούν;

    «Επιλογές από τις ηχογραφήσεις των έργων που περιέχονται στο δίσκο και που υπογράφουν, εκτός από μένα, σημαντικοί Ελληνες συνθέτες της παλαιότερης αλλά και νεότερης γενιάς, όπως οι Δημήτρης Δραγατάκης, Ντίνος Κωνσταντινίδης, Δημήτρης Νικολάου, Μιχάλης Τραυλός, Ευάγγελος Κόκκορης, Μπάμπης Κανάς και Μηνάς Αλεξιάδης. Ομιλητές θα είναι ο κριτικός και ιστορικός της μουσικής Γιώργος Μονεμβασίτης και ο αρχιμουσικός Μίλτος Λογιάδης».

    - Το «Metamorphosis»;

    «Η πρωτοβουλία για τη δημιουργία του CD ανήκει στον ομποΐστα Σπύρο Κοντό. Η παρούσα ανθολογία, που -ας σημειωθεί εδώ- φιλοδοξεί να είναι η πρώτη μιας σειράς αντίστοιχων εκδόσεων, επιχειρεί να διαμορφώσει ένα ηχητικό τοπίο το οποίο μεταμορφώνεται στη ροή του χρόνου μέσα από τα έργα οκτώ Ελλήνων δημιουργών, γραμμένα περίπου την ίδια περίοδο».

    - Εχει και διάκριση;

    «Το CD βραβεύτηκε στην εκδήλωση βραβείων "Κάρολος Κουν" και Βραβείων Κριτικών Θεάτρου και Μουσικής 2012. Του απονεμήθηκε "τιμητική διάκριση σε δισκογραφική εργασία ελληνικού ενδιαφέροντος", ξεχωρίζοντας ανάμεσα σε αξιόλογες δισκογραφικές παραγωγές».

    - Μουσική θεολογία;

    «Είναι αλήθεια ότι πάντα με γοήτευε η αρχαία ελληνική μουσική παράδοση -τη γνωρίζουμε σήμερα αποσπασματικά-, αλλά και η φυσική συνέχεια της, η βυζαντινή. Παράλληλα, η φιλοσοφία των κλασικών χρόνων αλλά και η θεολογία με συνέπαιρναν πολύ νωρίτερα ίσως από την ίδια τη μουσική. Αυτός ο συνδυασμός της μαθητείας στην "καθαρή" σκέψη, τη συνεχή άσκηση για την άρθρωση του μουσικού λόγου, αλλά και την αναζήτηση του θείου μέσα στο πλαίσιο της ορθόδοξης θεολογίας ορίζουν τον τρόπο που σκέφτομαι και δρω ως συνθέτης».

    - «Παράκλησις»;

    «Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα του τελευταίου στοιχείου που ανέφερα είναι και το έργο μου για σόλο όμποε, που περιλαμβάνεται στην παρούσα δισκογράφηση με τίτλο "Παράκλησις" - αρχικά γραμμένο για κλαρινέτο. Πρόκειται για τη μουσική μεταφορά της εμπειρίας ενός θρησκευόμενου κατά τη διάρκεια της Ακολουθίας του Παρακλητικού Κανόνα προς τη Θεοτόκο. Μια διαδοχή 7 μερών, που ακολουθούν τη φορτισμένη συγκινησιακά πορεία από την προσευχή μέσα από την προσδοκία στο θαύμα».

    - Η μουσική παιδεία;

    «Παρά τις προόδους, τα γενικότερα αποτελέσματα παραμένουν απογοητευτικά. Μιλώ για την εξειδικευμένη παιδεία των ωδείων, γιατί όσον αφορά τα προγράμματα μουσικής εκπαίδευσης του υπουργείου Παιδείας στην Πρωτοβάθμια και Δευτεροβάθμια Εκπαίδευση, η κατάσταση είναι οικτρή».

    - Δεν θα ξεχάσετε;

    «Ενα ρεσιτάλ πιάνου του μεγάλου Κύπριου πιανίστα Κυπριανού Κατσαρή, που παρακολούθησα πριν από πολλά χρόνια στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών. Ηταν, θυμάμαι, το έργο του Robert Schumann "Παιδικές σκηνές" - ένα τόσο πολυπαιγμένο έργο. Μου φάνηκε ότι το άκουγα για πρώτη φορά».
